Why get a DSLR

13 Sep

So you’ve tired of your small QuickCam, Bored of trying to fight with your Auto mode to take a creative photograph and Dreamed of focusing on what you want to focus on and not what your camera wants to. Maybe its time to get a DSLR!

DSLR stands for “Digital Single Lens Reflex”, what this basically means is when you look through the viewfinder your looking through the actual lens by means of an angled mirror “Think of it as a milk carton periscope” and also most DSLR’s allow you to change the lens to a variety of different types.

You maybe asking “So what does all this mean for me?” it means just one thing! COMPLETE CONTROL.

Lets compare images.

Image taken with Digital Camera

^The above Image was taken with a €200 digital camera “note the lack of close focus and the noise level”

DSLR IMAGE

^The above image was taken with a €300 DSLR “Note the fine selected focus and lack of noise due to manual light adjustment”

Its easy to see that the DSLR has surpassed quality compared to the Digital Camera, both images where takin on the same day at the same time but because the DSLR allows you complete manual control over every aspect of the camera capture you get what you want! as compared to the Digital Camera that uses an intelligent AI to try and adjust the settings to what it might possibly look like to your eye and sometimes it does a good job and sometimes it doesn’t but sometimes “sometimes” isn’t good enough “confused yet? I am!”

So why get a DSLR?

Well if you want to seriously get into Photography a DSLR is a no brainer! you don’t necessarily need to know about the various features of a DSLR “such as Aperture,ISO,White Balance etc” to make excellent use of a DSLR, When you do get your hands on one you’ll suddenly discover how easy it is to get top quality shots with minimum effort. Cost wise it actually turns out pretty good! I suggest starting with a second hand DSLR because most photographers upgrade there Equipment every 2 years so you can get a really good bargain on a not so obsolete camera and considering most people who purchase a DSLR buy them new and use them professionally you can be assured that a second hand one will be in really good condition “Internally that is”  plus most Photography Stores will clean and maintain the camera before sale.

But what about lenses? Since most DSLR cameras allow you to change the lens it allows you allot of freedom, mainly because you can purchase a lens for a specific type of photography such as Macro for extreme close ups “like insects” or Telephoto lenses for wildlife or sport, and again I suggest you start of with a second hand lens because they can get really expensive “some even costing €6000!”

So if your looking for an upgrade to your existing camera and want more freedom and control over how your Image will look, then get yourself a DSLR!  let it be your stepping stone to better photography and don’t be afraid to start with second hand, most professionals start that way and you would be amazed at the deals you can get.

Hope this little post helps you decide 🙂
